- Egg was the son of a London gunsmith. He and Frith became friends when they were students togehter, firstly at Henry Sass's art school at 6 Charlotte Street and tehn at the Royal Academy Schools. Although this portrait has been said to date from 1851, Frith's youthful appearance suggests it is probably earlier. They remained close friends until Egg's death in 1863, and the picture remained in Frith's family until donated to the Mercer Art Gallery by a descendant in 1963.
