The Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) was formed in 1949 as a successor to the ATS, and it eventually included all women serving in the Army except medical and veterinary orderlies, chaplains and nurses. It was disbanded in 1992 when men’s and women’s service was merged.

Information leaflet, 1959.
A leaflet issued to the parents and families of men undertaking National Service. This leaflet was received by the parents of Rifleman (later Lieutenant-General) Peter Duffnell in December 1959.
One section of the leaflet deals with the reasons behind National Service, ‘Because of the unsettled times in which we live, our country, in common with many others, has an obligation to assist in keeping the peace. Our commitments require us to maintain defence forces in many places throughout the world and it is impracticable to maintain a standing army of sufficient size to do this’.

The Royal Army Medical Corps was established as the Medical Staff Corps in 1884 and in 1898 was renamed the Royal Army Medical Corps. The Corps was granted it’s motto and badge by Queen Victoria in 1902. The design was drawn from Greek mythology and features the staff of Asclepius. Asclepius was a Greek god associated with medicine and healing. It has since been adopted worldwide as the symbol of the medical profession.
