The unrelenting casualty rate on the Western Front persuaded the British government to raise the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in December 1916 to release experienced soldiers from non-combatant roles. The WAACs took their place.

The Territorial Army Pool of Public Information Officers was established after the Falklands War to provide escorts for civilian journalists reporting on Army operations.
The experience of some journalists in Bosnia during the mid 1990s, led to criticism and ultimately reorganisation into the Media Operations Group (Volunteer). Their role is now performed by 77th Brigade.

Indian armies used elephants for centuries. The armies of the East India Company adopted this practice, and elephants were particularly useful for moving heavy artillery. The mahout (driver) would use the goad for steering and controlling the elephant.

- Car pennant, used by General Sir Frank Messervy, Pakistan Army, 1947-1948.
Messervy used this car pennant when he was Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Army between 1947 to 1948. Pakistan was established in August 1947 following the Partition of India. This resulted in a huge number of displaced people and violent outbursts and many lives were tragically lost.
Messervy retired in 1948 and was granted the honorary rank of general for his service.
