- Object history note:
- The tension between the idea of plastic as a cheap mass-market substitute for other materials and plastic as an exciting modern design material only began to be resolved in the late sixties with designers using plastic for its own intrinsic qualitites. The glossy, smooth surfaces, generous curves and bright colours on the 'Input' range was a successful attempt to apply high-design principles to plastic kitchenware for everyday use. Plastic reached a peak of popularity in the early 1970s before the ecological implications of long-term disposal made it a less attractive design material. ABS plastic, also used for the production of objects like telephones, Lego and hairdryers, is similar in look and feel to early phenolic plastics.
The full 'Input' range of twenty-one items were practical and modular. Most sizes could be bought either with or without lids. Some had optional heat-resistant inserts to create ashtrays. 'Input' was one of the key ranges which re-defined the aesthetic of the kitchen. It was a forerunner of many similar ranges, and long-term commercial success, with wide distribution. It won a Design Council Award in 1974.

- In 1972 Airfix Plastics initiated a design programme which aimed to improve the image of plastics from cheap and disposable to high quality and desirable. The business approached Conran Associates, a design subsidiary of Habitat, to design a range of plastic products for the office or home.
The Input range was launched in May 1973 and designed by Conran Associates for Crayonne, a newly established division of Airfix. The range consisted of 21 'containers' including bowls, dishes, trays, bins, vases, pots and an ice bucket which were all made from heavy duty ABS plastic, selected for its strength and scratch and shatter resistance. Gift boxed to elevate their appeal, they were initially produced in four colours: red, yellow, green and white.
The containers were produced to be almost twice as thick as other ABS products through a particularly low rate injection moulding cycle. All the units in the range were based on the same diameter and height ratios to achieve an integrated appearance and were given identification numbers, rather than names. The Royal Free Hospital placed an order of the containers to be used as vases to bring colour and cheer to their wards.
The range won a Design Centre Award and featured in the exhibition British Design 1948–2012: Innovation in the Modern Age at the V&A in 2012.

- EKCO (from Eric Kirkham Cole Limited) was a British electronics company producing radio and television sets from 1924 until 1960. Expanding into plastic production for its own use, Ekco Plastics produced both radio cases and later domestic plastic products; the plastics company became Lin Pac Mouldings Ltd.
David Harman Powell was born in 1931 and educated at Southend School of Art 1946-9 where he won a travel scholarship enabling him to tour Europe, particularly Sweden, Denmark and Italy.
Industrial drawing experience at Ekco Ltd led to a permanent post in the design office under 'Jake' White and then, from 1953-60, at British Industrial Plastics under 'Woody' Woodfull. Powell returned to Ekco in 1960 to take over from Martyn Rowlands as chief designer of their Plastics Division.
Powell won the 1955 Horners' design award for an all-plastics greenhouse, the 1968 Design Council's Duke of Edinburgh Award for Elegant Design with the Ekco Nova range of tableware and the 1970 Council of Industrial Design Award for Ekco Nova flatware.
Powell's innovative and stylish award winning plastic objects played a major part in the acceptance of the material as a serious alternative to traditional materials, and in many cases as the most suitable material for new products.

- Brief description:
- A recycled polypropylene plant pot in the 'kaboom' colourway, made by Relic, the own brand of Precious Plastic Lancaster. This start-up is connected to the international Precious Plastic global movement which seeks to create community-centric plastic artisans, and was originally developed by Dave Hakkens as part of his studies with the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Holland in 2012. Using open-source machinery and designs, low-volume, craft-based businesses are supported in the collection, shredding and recycling of waste plastics into new products. It is estimated that approximately 1000 people, groups and organisations are currently working with Precious Plastic machines and knowledge as at 2021. The Precious Plastic Lancaster team source their polypropylene from bottle tops, hangers and broken Tupperware, with the swirls and layers within each plant pot being unique.

- Text:
- Martyn Rowlands trained at the Central School in London. He specialised in plastics. He was one of the first trained industrial designers to work with British industry after the Second World War. He worked first for Bakelite Ltd, then set up the design department at Ekco Plastics, where his products won a number of design awards. In 1959 he left Ekco to work as an independent design consultant. This was at a time when the idea of the design consultancy in Britain was still in its infancy. One important commission in 1966 was the popular telephone known as the ‘Trimphone’, which won a Design Council Award.
Rowlands's products for Ekco included tableware, nursery products, a baby bath with stand and a watering can. He developed products specifically to suit the qualities of plastic materials. He did this rather than simply carry across traditional forms.
