- Alfred Rowden was a keen amateur photographer and natural historian in Exeter. He often gave talks at local field clubs, illustrated with magic lantern slides that he created or purchased from commercial manufacturers. This photograph is one a series from a Royal Albert Memorial College Field Club and Natural History Society visit to Lundy Island. The names of the people in this group have not been recorded, but research suggests the man on the right is Alfred Rowden.

- Prince Albert inspecting the model for the Memorial to the 1851 Exhibition, set up in the quadrangle of the South Kensington Museum. The building in the background is the Sheepshanks gallery with the Iron Museum ('The Brompton Boilers') next to it. Sir Henry Cole and his dog are in the left foreground; and at the centre of the group behind the Prince is Captain Francis Fowke. The Memorial was erected in 1863 in the gardens of The Royal Horticultural Society, but was moved to its present position behind the Albert Hall between c.1890 and 1893.
