- Object name(s):
- fossil: mammal; EQUIDAE: Equus caballus: horse; horse bone
- Brief description:
- This horse leg bone was found at Kents Cavern. Horse’s legs are adapted for running, and the unusual arrangement of a horse’s limb bones enables them to reach great speed. 50 million years ago the ancestors of modern horses would have been small and had more than one toe on each leg. Over millions of years the horse has evolved to walk on just a single toe.

- Object name(s):
- fossil: mammal; EQUIDAE: Equus caballus: horse; horse tooth
- Brief description:
- Donated by the British Association for Advancement of Science committee. Horses moved into southern Britain during the last interglacial, known as the Ipswichian, before the present interglacial we are living through spanning the entire Holocene epoch. They might have looked similar to Exmoor ponies in size. The presence of horse teeth and bones in Devon caves is probably the result of scavenging and hunting by hyenas. This one was found at Kents Cavern.
