- Object name(s):
- fossil: mammal; EQUIDAE: Equus caballus: horse; horse tooth
- Brief description:
- Donated by the British Association for Advancement of Science committee. Horses moved into southern Britain during the last interglacial, known as the Ipswichian, before the present interglacial we are living through spanning the entire Holocene epoch. They might have looked similar to Exmoor ponies in size. The presence of horse teeth and bones in Devon caves is probably the result of scavenging and hunting by hyenas. This one was found at Kents Cavern.

- Object name(s):
- watercolour on paper; drawing; Exeter as seen from the Canal Basin; Exeter as seen from the Canal Basin
- Brief description:
- The Canal, first constructed in the 1560s, was enlarged over the centuries. By the 1830s the Basin was at its most developed, when large warehouses were built along the quayside. In the centre, to the left of the Cathedral, are the buildings of Colleton Crescent, built between 1802 and 1814. To the left of the Cathedral is St Michael’s church, completed in 1867 and on the far right, the new St Leonard’s Church, completed two years before this watercolour.

- Object name(s):
- insect: moth; SPHINGIDAE: Deilephila elpenor: elephant hawk-moth; elephant hawk-moth
- Brief description:
- Adult elephant hawk-moths are quite a common sight May-July across the UK. Frank Lees found this specimen near his home at Maidencombe 5 July 1961.
The caterpillar (larva) looks a little like an elephant’s trunk. It would make a tasty snack for a foraging bird but it has alarming eye spots and by rearing up and retracting its head it tricks the bird into thinking it is a snake.

- Object name(s):
- insect: moth; SPHINGIDAE: Deilephila porcellus: small elephant hawk-moth; small elephant hawk-moth
- Brief description:
- Adult small elephant hawk-moths fly May-July across the UK but prefer chalky areas. Frank Lees collected this specimen near his home 4 June 1960.
This is the much smaller relative of the elephant hawk-moth Deilephila elpenor, and it has much yellower wings. The larva is also smaller and lacks the curved horn on the rear end that occurs in most other hawk-moth species.

- Object name(s):
- fossil: mammal; CERVIDAE: Megaloceros giganteus: giant elk; giant elk
- Brief description:
- The base of an antler belonging to an Irish elk (giant deer) collected from Kents Cavern. Surprisingly, the Irish elk is neither exclusively Irish as bones have been found as far afield as Africa and Siberia, nor closely related to either modern day elk species. This creature, unlike many other ice age megafauna, survived well into the Holocene epoch for reasons not fully understood. This epoch was an interglacial when climate was changing and humans were dominating.
