- Object name(s):
- Prisoner of War Loin Cloth
- Brief description:
- This intriguing piece of material was used as a loin cloth, known as a ‘fundoshi’ in Japan. It was the only garment worn by Arthur Newcombe, a Newton Abbot gentleman, after he was captured in Singapore by the Japanese army during the Second World War. Sent to Burma (now Myanmar), he was employed in the camp’s drawing office, working on plans for the railway and bridges, as he had formerly been training to become an architect. Had he been building them he may well have not lived to tell the tale. Made by Mr Newcombe himself from a mosquito net, the fundoshi is a sobering reminder of the horrific conditions endured by many prisoners of war

- Object name(s):
- vessel; Trevisker ware bucket urn; Bronze Age pot
- Brief description:
- This bucket-shaped urn is the largest prehistoric pot to be found in Devon. It was found during the construction of a housing estate near Newton Abbot and had to be very carefully pieced together and conserved. Pieces of burnt bone were found with the urn suggesting that it was used as part of a cremation burial. A ‘belt’ of clay with six lugs has been added around the centre of the pot and above this band much of the put is decorated with combed lines. Inside, a cross of clay has been attached to the base, this may have been decoration or to add strength.

- Object name(s):
- Leathercraft Patchwork Bag
- Brief description:
- Made from Devon Leathercrafts samples, this vibrant bag was sewn together by the donor. It consists of different samples of green, orange, brown, blue and red leather. When Vicary’s leather-goods department closed, a new business called Carter & Douglas was established in 1922 in an old stable off Albany Street. The business succeeded but the partnership did not. Carter bought out Douglas and the name changed to Devon Leathercrafts. Over the years the range of merchandise produced by the company varied but was largely based on purses, wallets, key cases and gift items.
