This cotton haversack, pictured with first aid pouch, webbing cartridge belt, shovel with cover, and bandolier, was made by the Atlas Manufacturing Company. It was used by a soldier of the American 29th Infantry Division during World War Two (1939-1945).
The 29th was a National Guard division from Maryland and Virginia. Known informally as ‘England’s Own’ it was posted to England in 1942. Initially stationed at Tidworth, it later undertook coast watch duties in Devon and Cornwall. In June 1944, the 29th Division formed part of the first wave of landings in the ‘Easy Red’ sector of OMAHA Beach.

A British version of the FN FAL rifle produced by the Belgian manufacturer Fabrique National Herstal, the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) became an icon of the British Army. It was used throughout the Cold War, in the Falklands campaign (1982) and in security operations in Northern Ireland. It was the main rifle for the Army from 1954 until it was replaced with the L85A1 (SA80) from 1985.
Initially produced with walnut wood furniture, this model has cheaper and more durable synthetic furniture made from a nylon and fibreglass composite called Maranyl.
