Gilt button made by Firmin and Sons, London, with Queen Victoria’s cypher within a garter inscribed with the unit title, ‘Madras Staff Corps’, surmounted by a crown and with leaf motifs around the edge.
The Madras Army was the army of the Madras Presidency, one of the three presidencies that made up the East India Company. After the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the presidencies and their armies came under the direct authority of the British Crown. From 1861 each army had its own staff corps created to provide and place officers in military, civil and political posts. In 1903 the presidency armies were merged into the British Indian Army with the separate staff corps amalgamated into the Indian Staff Corps.

Philpots was a Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) Unit Administrator. Although it was a uniformed service, there were no military ranks in the WAAC; instead of officers and other ranks, it was made up of 'officials' and 'members'. Officials were divided into 'controllers' and 'administrators', members were 'subordinate officials', 'forewomen' and 'workers'.

Several former senior officers of the corps attended the event, including Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan, the corps’ first controller, who proposed the loyal toast. The back of the menu has 17 signatures in pencil by many of the attendees.

Associated with a broadsword made by Henry Wilkinson, 1900 (c).
Similar swords, with the appropriate badge, were carried by officers of other Scottish regiments. Raised in 1633, the Royal Scots were part of the Scottish Army before joining the British Army.

Gummersall, of Tong Street, Bradford, was discharged following the termination of her engagement in November 1919. Her ration book would have entitled her This card would have included ration stamps for cheese, jam, lard, tea, sugar, butter and margarine.
