This cotton haversack, pictured with first aid pouch, webbing cartridge belt, shovel with cover, and bandolier, was made by the Atlas Manufacturing Company. It was used by a soldier of the American 29th Infantry Division during World War Two (1939-1945).
The 29th was a National Guard division from Maryland and Virginia. Known informally as ‘England’s Own’ it was posted to England in 1942. Initially stationed at Tidworth, it later undertook coast watch duties in Devon and Cornwall. In June 1944, the 29th Division formed part of the first wave of landings in the ‘Easy Red’ sector of OMAHA Beach.

A British version of the FN FAL rifle produced by the Belgian manufacturer Fabrique National Herstal, the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) became an icon of the British Army. It was used throughout the Cold War, in the Falklands campaign (1982) and in security operations in Northern Ireland. It was the main rifle for the Army from 1954 until it was replaced with the L85A1 (SA80) from 1985.
Initially produced with walnut wood furniture, this model has cheaper and more durable synthetic furniture made from a nylon and fibreglass composite called Maranyl.

An example of the standard rifle of the British Army in 1939, many thousands of which were captured by the German Army in France during 1940. This particular weapon was issued to a second rank German unit in 1944 and captured by Sergeant S Scott of No 2 Army Commando in the fighting after D-Day. It has the enigmatic name ’ZENA’ carved on the butt.

During an action at Montchamp, Calvados, France, on the 8th August 1944, Sergeant Roy Bishop’s life was saved when a piece of shrapnel penetrated his platoon book and wallet and smashed his Army issue fob watch in the breast pocket of his shirt.

Although poison gas was not used during World War Two (1939-1945), respirators were issued to all Allied troops. The Germans had large stockpiles of nerve gas but never used them, believing that the Allies had also developed nerve agents and would respond in kind to their use.

This pattern helmet was introduced in 1878 and used for full dress until the outbreak of the First World War. Made of cork and covered in blue wool cloth, they could be fitted with either a spike or a ball top fitting. Regiments and Corps using horses, including the Army Service Corps always used a ball top fitting to prevent injuries to horses while adjusting saddles or harness.
