A British version of the FN FAL rifle produced by the Belgian manufacturer Fabrique National Herstal, the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) became an icon of the British Army. It was used throughout the Cold War, in the Falklands campaign (1982) and in security operations in Northern Ireland. It was the main rifle for the Army from 1954 until it was replaced with the L85A1 (SA80) from 1985.
This is an early production model with walnut wood furniture. Later versions had cheaper and more durable synthetic furniture made from a nylon and fibreglass composite called Maranyl.

Manufactured November 1952 at the Royal Laboratories, with respirator cartridge, Mk 3.
Given the possibility of a modern battlefield where nuclear, biological and chemical attacks were probable, World War Two era respirators with eye shields and anti-gas ointment were reissued to National Servicemen, especially those serving in Germany.

Now known as 3 PARA, the 3rd Battalion was formed in 1941 and was decimated during Operation Market Garden. Subsequently, 3 Para was deployed to Northern Ireland 12 times during the Troubles and saw action in the Falklands Conflict.
Currently it is part of 16 Air Assault Brigade. 3 Para served in Afghanistan as pat of the Operation Resolute Support Mission protecting government advisors and supporting the Afghan National Army with officer training.

The regulation broadsword blade is decorated with the regimental badge of The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), Scottish thistles and St Andrew’s saltire. Similar swords, with the appropriate badge, were carried by officers of other Scottish regiments. Raised in 1633, the Royal Scots were part of the Scottish Army before joining the British Army.

Between the two World Wars, de Wiart served as Commander of the British Military mission to Poland before retiring in 1924. He was reemployed as the commander of the British Military Mission to the Polish Army in 1939.

Red and black, shield shaped cloth badge with embroidered sword and unit number, in Roman numerals, ‘XIV’.
The multi-national 14th Army was created in 1943 and included divisions from Britain, India, East and West Africa and smaller contingents from other British Empire countries. Its badge was designed by its commander General William Slim (1891-1970). As he planned to reconquer Burma from the north the sword points downward. The cross guard of the sword forms an ‘S’ and stands for Slim.
