- Keith Spalding (1913-2002) was a German scholar and lexicographer. He was an exile from Nazi Germany who settled in Wales in 1946 and spent his academic life there. His papers constitute one of the exile archives at the University of London's Institute of Modern Languages Research; the painting is part of the Spalding archive. Signed top left: Ph. The sculptor, Gordine, was connected to the University of London through her husband, Richard Hare (1907-1966), a scholar of Russian literature and the School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies (SSEES), 1949-1966, where in 1962 he became the School's first Chair of Russian Literature.
