- Leonard W. Forster
- Object name(s):
- Picture
- Collection:
- Senate House Library
- Comments:
- Framed. Signed top right. Although he spent most of his scholarly career at Cambridge, Prof. Leonard Wilson Forster (1913-1997) served as Professor of German at University College London from 1950 until 1961. According to John Flood (ODNB), he "represented all that was best in British scholarship: he was a man of fearsome intellect and immense erudition, yet he wore his learning lightly, and in his scholarship as in his life he was a model of urbanity, elegance, and sheer style". Between 1986 and 1990 he was president of the English Goethe Society, whose papers are held at the University of London's Institute of Modern Languages Research.

- half-length portrait of Queen Elizabeth the QM
- Object name(s):
- Picture
- Collection:
- Senate House Library
- Comments:
- Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was the ninth Chancellor of the University of London, 1955-1980. The University had awarded her an honorary degree in 1937. This is one of two portraits of her in the University of London art collection; her gown as Chancellor is also on display. Portrait signed and dated LXIII to lower right. Framed. Annigoni became known in England through an exhibition in 1950 at Wildenstein & Co., London. He is best known for his portraits of Queen Elizabeth II; other sitters have included Pope John XXIII, and President John F. Kennedy. Annigoni based his style on Renaissance artists, Leonardo da Vinci and Titian, working in tempera and oil to simulate old-master oils, or pen-and-ink to imitate silverpoint.
