Object history note:: The Great Eastern was an iron ship designed by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the late 19th century. At that point, the steam ship was deemed to be the largest ship ever constructed. After a disastrous maiden voyage and becoming redundant due to damage, the ship was eventually dismantled in 1899. The Great Eastern was also involved in the laying down of the first lasting Transantlantic telegraph cable in 1866.

Text:: Professor Alexander Merrie Hardie was born in Aberdeen and studied classic then engineering at Aberdeen University. Prof. Hardie worked for Metropolitan Vickers in Manchester before WWII and became friends with Jimmie Finniecomb, whose wife originated from Aberdeen. This etching was a gift to Alice Finniecomb in the 1930s. During the Second World War Prof. Hardie joined the RAF and after the war became Professor of Engineering at Brunel University. He retired to Cromarty, where he became well known as an artist.

Brief description:: Printed image of the Thames Tunnel coopperplate engraving, with a border made up of doric columns supported by Atlas (?) on either side, a boat with British flag and Britannia sailing along the top edge, and motifs of oars and the words "Thames Tunnel" along the bottom. Hand-coloured central image. Below the central image, 'Tombelson del[ineavi]t' and 'H. Winkles sculp[sit]'. Taken from an edition of William Gray Fearnside, Eighty picturesque views on the Thames and Medway, engraved on steel by the first artists (first edn pub. 1834).

Brief description:: This image by William Weaver Baker shows a view through Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. The construction of the bridge took thirty-three years. It is famously the work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and is still a distinctive landmark. Weaver Baker mainly took photographs of buildings and objects in Exeter, but does appear to have travelled further afield to see places of special architectural interest. This object is not on display.
