This embroidery was made by Charles Edward Stannard of the Essex Regiment, 3rd Indian Division.
Many soldiers took up needle craft as a pastime during army service, and often became very accomplished. Soldiers took great pride in embroidery work, which was often shown in military or industrial exhibitions and displays.
This beautiful example is embroidered ‘V DAY INDIA 1945’ at the bottom.

Lt Gen Sir Hudson Lowe was the son of an Army surgeon and his Irish wife. Born in Galway, Ireland, he and his mother spent his early years following the Army though various garrison towns frequently overseas. At 11 years old Sir Hudson Lowe obtained a post as Ensign in the East Devon Militia. At 18 he joined his father’s regiment the 50th Foot. He fought in a number of smaller conflicts with the French culminating in his service during the Napoleonic Wars. Following Napoleon's surrender Lowe was appointed Governor of St Helena, earning him the nickname Napoleon’s Gaoler.

- Windproof Desert disruptive pattern material (DPM) Combat smock, of Sgt Chantelle Taylor, Royal Army Medical Corps, 2006 (c).
Taylor joined the Army as a Combat Medical Technician in 1998. She served in Afghanistan in 2006 and 2008. This uniform was worn by her in 2006 when she was attached to 16 Air Assault Brigade as indicated by the patch on the left sleeve. On her 2008 tour Taylor made history as the first female British soldier to kill an enemy in combat, when returning fire following an ambush.
Taylor left the Army in 2010 and returned to Afghanistan with the US State Department to develop a trauma assistance programme to support victims of the conflict.

The Army Gold Medal was a campaign medal which could only be awarded to officers. The British occupied Guadeloupe in 1810 but returned it to France permanently in 1816 under the Treaty of Paris. Francis Browne was appointed major in the regiment in 1808. He retired as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st West India Regiment in 1828.

‘The Lioness’ is the current journal for the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association. This copy was sent to Nellie Irene Giles (née Ellingham) in May 1965.
The Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps Old Comrades Association was formed in 1919. On the formation of the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) in 1949, the Association changed its name to the WRAC Association. The Association seeks to support those women who served in Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps (QMAAC), the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the WRAC and female soldiers in today’s British Army. The Association changed the name of its journal to ‘The Lioness’ in 1950.

- Miniature medal group awarded to Brig Francis Victor Reginald Woodhouse (1897-1987), Indian Army.
Woodhouse joined the Indian Army in 1915, and went on to serve in a number of regiments in his long career including the 88th Carnatic Infantry, 99th Deccan Infantry, 55th Coke’s Rifles, 51st Sikhs, 1/13th Rifles, 6/13th Frontier Force. He was commander of 1st Indian Infantry Brigade from 1941 to 1943.
During World War One he served in Mesopotamia and Palestine; in Waziristan 1937 to 1939, and during World War Two in Malaya and Burma. He was mentioned in dispatches three times.

Sent to Mary Charteris of Bristol, it reads: ‘I have to inform you that the date fixed for your journey to London is Thursday 24th May. You will have to leave Temple Meads by the 2.10 pm train, arriving at Paddington at 4.20pm. Kindly see that you are on the platform a quarter of an hour before the train starts. A red arm-band, which you are asked to attach to your left sleeve, is enclosed. A railway warrant will be sent you from the War Office authorities’.

Previously used by the Yugoslav Army, this helmet still bears the latter formation’s Red Star emblem. During the late 1990s the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) waged a campaign of separatist violence against the Yugoslav security forces and ethnic Serbs from Kosovo which precipitated a Yugoslav military crackdown. The latter operation caused the displacement of thousands of ethnic Albanians, which in turn led to the Kosovo War (1998-1999) and military intervention by The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

Alfonso XIII was colonel-in-chief of the 16th Lancers and 16th/5th Lancers from April 1905 until his death on 28th Feburary 1941. He was promoted Field Marshal in 1928.
Traditionally on band nights in the Officers’ Mess of the 16th Lancers the Spanish Royal Anthem would be played before the British National Anthem.
