Lia Parfit was Argentinian and her memoirs begin with her family background. They go on to discuss recruitment, her medical, the issue of uniform, her initial tasks, training at Aldershot, working as a translator in the orderly room, army meals, sports days and drilling. They also mentions the Spanish flu epidemic, the corps’ change of name to Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps and a review by Queen Mary.

This badge was worn by Olive Tremagne Miles whilst serving in Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS), 1914-1918.
The QAIMNS (Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service) were founded in 1902, replacing the Army Nursing Service. By the end of World War One (1914-1918) about 10,000 nurses had been deployed alongside the British Expeditionary Force, serving in all British Army campaigns.

This form was issued to demobilised men and women after World War One (1914-1918) and was a form of unemployment relief. Women received 24 shillings, with additional allowances for dependants. This sum was however available for a strictly limited period.

On 25 August 1945, 21st Army Group, which had fought its way across North West Europe during World War Two (1939-1945), was renamed the British Army of the Rhine. It was responsible for the occupation and administration of the British Zone of a divided Germany.
However, as relations with the Soviet Union deteriorated, it eventually formed the core of the British forces responsible for the defence of West Germany during the Cold War (1947-1990).

The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was formed in 1917 to free up valuable and experienced soldiers from the rear areas for front line service. The women of the WAAC replaced them, undertaking a variety of roles that were crucial to the war effort.

This pile cap, with warm ear-flaps, was worn by Lieutenant (later Colonel) Leslie Sharpe of 1st Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment, during 1950-1951. This cap is typical of the type of equipment the US supplied to British troops during their first extreme Korean winter.
