- Brief description:
- Peaked forage cap, Army Chaplains Department, 1914-1918.
Forage cap with blackened bronze cap badge, black cloth backing, thin black patent chinstrap and general service side buttons; brown leather sweatband to the interior with additional cloth section.
The Army Chaplains Department was established in 1796, providing spiritual guidance and pastoral care to serving soldiers and their families.
During World War One (1914-1918) over 4,500 chaplains served with the British Army to provide for the spiritual and moral well-being of the soldiers. Many gained the respect of ordinary soldiers by serving alongside them in the trenches. Three chaplains won Victoria Crosses during the war. Many others were decorated, often for bringing in wounded men. The Department lost 179 chaplains during the conflict. To mark its contribution, King George V granted it the prefix 'Royal' in 1919.

- Object name(s):

- Brief description:
- Pugri badge, 1st Brahmans, 1903-1922.
Brass badge with the regimental number, ‘1’, surmounted by a King’s Crown, above a scroll bearing the title, ‘Brahmans’.
The pugri or pagri is a form of headdress.
The numeral ‘1’ on this badge is significant as the battalion was originally raised in 1776 as the 30th Battalion of the Bengal Army, but became the senior regiment of the Bengal Army. It was designated as the 1st Brahman Infantry in 1901 and became the 1st Brahmans two years later. The battalion largely served on the North West Frontier during World War One (1914-1918), followed by Aden in 1918. In the 1922 reorganisation of the Indian Army, it was re-badged as the 4th Battalion, 1st Punjab Regiment and disbanded in 1931.

- Brief description:
- Pattern 1821 East India Company Light Cavalry sowar’s sword, 1840 (c).
The patterns of swords issued to sowars of the East India Company’s armies are poorly documented but, in general, their hilts followed the chronological progression of British cavalry patterns. This sword has the mark of the Company’s Senior Examiner, 1840 (c).
The sword has the pipe backed, or rounded backed blade normally associated with the officers Pattern 1821 sword. It appears that the pipe back was popular in India and remained in service there much longer than in the British Army.

- Brief description:
- Army Staff great coat worn by Field Marshal Lord Roberts, VC, 1910 (c).
Frederick Sleigh Roberts, known as ‘Bobs’ was commissioned into the Bengal Artillery in 1851. Much of his subsequent career was spent as a Staff officer but he still saw a good deal of active service. Roberts won the Victoria Cross in the Indian Mutiny, but first came to public notice when he led his troops on the legendary 480 km march from Kabul to Kandahar, during the 2nd Afghan War. In 1885 he succeeded to the post of Commander-in-Chief, India, a position he held until 1893.
After the early reverses of the Boer War, Roberts took over command of the British forces in South Africa. Together with his Chief of Staff Major-General Horatio Herbert, Lord Kitchener; Roberts revitalised the British military effort. He finally handed over command to Kitchener on 29 November 1900 at the age of 68. Roberts then served as the last Commander-in-Chief of the British Army for three years before the post was abolished in 1904.
