Battle Dress (or No. 5 Uniform) was a type of military uniform adopted by the British Army in 1939 for active service, as opposed to dress uniform which was worn at formal functions. Made of serge wool, it was usually worn for service in temperate climates and consisted of a short jacket that buttoned to the outside of high-waisted trousers.

This handsome sword was one of many awarded by the East India Company to British Army and Royal Navy officers after distinguished actions in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815). The Mameluke hilt and curved blade was a favourite style for presentation swords.

This was part of an infantryman’s load carrying equipment. It was made of white leather and could be attached with straps to a belt or valise (canvas bag).
From 1870, the British Army adopted load carrying equipment known as valise equipment. It distributed weight around the torso and could be adapted to different conditions.

This model of bayonet was used in both World Wars. The single edged blade on this example bears the mark of Kokura arsenal. The bayonet incorporated a quillon designed to catch and break an opponent’s bayonet in hand-to-hand combat. The quillon was retained by the Japanese long after other armies had removed them.

This badge consists of a frosted garter with the regiment’s title surmounted by a monarchial crown. The 62nd was raised in 1756 and served with the British Army until the 1881 reforms, when it became part of The Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire Regiment).

- Sealed pattern fringe sample for a drummer of the 4th (or The King’s Own) Regiment of Foot, sealed in 1860. Alternate blue and white worsted fringe 1.75 inches in length.
A ‘sealed pattern’ is a prototype of any item that the British Army issued to soldiers. It provided clothing or equipment suppliers with an example to copy.
The regiment, now known as the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, was first formed in 1680 as the 2nd Tangier Regiment. It became known as the 4th (or The King’s Own) Regiment of Foot as a result of the Army reforms of 1751.
