- Carnival Costume
- Brief description:
- Elaborate gold jewelled jacket and shoulder piece from the carnival costume ‘Mandarin from the Golden Temple’. Eric Splatt, who made this costume by hand, could be seen parading around the town sporting this incredible outfit during Newton Abbot carnival. A similarly elaborate robe was worn underneath the jacket with a large, gold, tiered headdress imitating the shape of a Chinese temple completing the look.The costume is decorated with coloured glass beads adding to the ornate appearance. Eric was a rather spectacular sight in this costume and is fondly remembered around the town.

- Camel Dung Bag
- Brief description:
- This unusual bag is made from beads strung together in an open work design. The larger black beads are made from pellets of camel dung which were imprinted with a floral motif before being dried and hardened. It was acquired by Dr Henry Mapleton who was the medical officer of health for Newton Abbot Urban and District Council from 1890 to 1932. Mapleton was an avid collector and amassed a wide range of objects from all over the world, some of which were donated to Newton Abbot Museum, including two cabinets containing 50 drawers of entomology featuring butterflies and moths, as well as fossils, axe heads and naval swords.

- Object name(s):
- Newton Banknote
- Brief description:
- This Newton Bank five-pound note, signed by Nicholas Baker, was issued on 20 March 1841 – just before the bank owners, Messrs. Wise, Farwell, Baker and Bentall, ran out of money. The private bank was established in 1817, in Bank Street, but by 1841 it had more debts than income. The partners had to sell assets to pay their creditors. Ayshford Wise had to sell Ford House; the sale details included ‘valuable and splendid furniture… two family carriages… minerals and fossils’. Finally debt-free in 1842, Ayshford Wise moved to Staffordshire but died five years later. The sorry business of assigning monies to creditors fell to Francis Hernaman and John Vicary of Newton Abbot.

- Object name(s):
- Toddler’s Shoe
- Brief description:
- Newton Abbot has had a leather industry since the 1700s and there have always been shoe-makers in the town. This tiny leather shoe was uncovered in a field in Wolborough. At just 120mm long, it clearly belonged to a young child. It is amazing that it has survived all these years! Although this example looks very well-worn and heavily scuffed, it’s owner probably suffered a good telling off for losing it; prior to mechanisation in the 1870s, shoes were an expensive, hand-made item that many working families in the eighteenth century struggled to afford.

- Royal Horse Artillery Jacket
- Brief description:
- This jacket was part of a Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) uniform worn during the First World War. It belonged to local man Sergeant William West, known as ‘Winky’, who served in India during the war. The RHA was formed in 1793, when the Royal Regiment of Artillery (founded 1716) created a mounted branch to provide mobile fire support to fast-moving cavalry units. In the Great War, Winky received a bullet wound to the back and on his return to Newton Abbot continued to work with horses – delivering bread via a horse-drawn cart.

- Object name(s):
- Sweetheart Pincushion
- Brief description:
- As the First World War raged across Europe, a Newton Abbot lady stitched this decorative pincushion for her beloved who was serving in France as a Royal Horse Artillery Signalman. As well as best wishes and messages beseeching the recipient to remember them, the cushion features the Royal Standard on the crossed flags. Embroidered heart-shaped cushions became a trend during the war. Often made from a kit, they are commonly referred to as sweetheart pincushions. This example is somewhat unusual as our record shows it was made by a woman as a gift to a soldier, whereas they were more often made by injured soldiers during their recovery.

- Checkers Set
- Brief description:
- This compact game of checkers (the American name for the popular board game of draughts) was given to David, a Newton Abbot boy, by one of the United States construction team working on the military hospital at Stover during the Second World War. The case has a stain from a tea mug, which shows it was well used by David, who must have been envied by his friends as he was also given a set of dominoes! The generosity of the U.S. soldiers during their time in Newton Abbot is well known: chocolates, cigarettes, and fine nylon stockings were regularly distributed for any kindness shown to the troops by local people.
