- Lewis gun
- Brief description:
- .303 Lewis Gun 1914 Pattern Mk I. With air cooling shroud and aluminium radiator. Complete with bipod and one 47 round pan magazine. Detatchable buttstock. Includes timber transit box. Range 880 yards effective 3500 yards maximum Magazive capacity 47 rounds or 97 rounds Rate of fire 500-600 rounds per minute Type of fire fully automatic only Weight 33lb with bipod and 47 rounds An American design from 1910. Lack of interest in his home country led the designer Colonel Isaac Newton Lewis to set up Armes Automatiques Lewis to manufacture the gun in Belgium whose army had shown an interest in the design. Introduced in 1915 the Lewis became the standard British light machine gun of the First war and by 1916 50000 had been manuactured. Captured weapons were also used by German troops. It was phased out in 1937 in favour of the lighter and more reliable Bren gun but was reissued as an emergency measure from 1940 onward. Many were used in the light anti aircraft mode during this period often on multiple mounts using the 97 round magazine pan. Lewis guns were also imported from America for Home Guard use. These models were in .30-06 calibre and had a red band painted round the shroud. In 1939 a .303 Lewis was placed in the empty Heugh No 1 emplacement and is said to have contributed to the shooting down of an enemy aircraft by Len Stockill. Due to its obsolete design, heavy weight and a mechanism prone to fouling the Lewis was retired at the end of the Second war.

- Object name(s):
- Bren Gun Mk I with aluminium flash hider.. Deactivated. Calibre .303 Magazine 30 rounds Introduced 1936
- Brief description:
- light machine gun. A British adaption of the Czechoslovakian VS26. Very accurate and reliable with a low rate of fire this has been described as the best light machine gun of WWII. Post war they were converted to 7.62mm and continue to be used in 2008 in India. It was capable of both automatic and single shot fire. The carrying handle, while it could be used to carry the gun and is placed at the centre of gravity was actually designed to allow overheated barrels to be changed rapidly without burning the users hands. Gunner Len Stockill felt that the accuracy was overrated and preferred a more open and peppering pattern though he agreed that one useful attribute of bullets hitting the same mark was the ability to punch holes through brick walls.

- Object name(s):
- German Mauser C96 1896-1937. Identified as Red 9 Conversion.
- Brief description:
- This example is a 'Red 9' (indicated by red no.9 on grip) which denoted a conversion from 7.63mm to 9mm (luger) for German military use during WWI. German Mauser C96 9mm pistol Wooden butt. The 7.63mm Mauser C96 introduced in 1896 was the first semi automatic pistol taken into military service. This is an example of the 9mm version adopted by the German army in 1917 recognised by the large number 9 engraved and painted red on the grips. It is recoil operated with a sliding barrel which moves to the rear to unlock the breech. The magazine held 10 rounds fed by stripper clip. Post war versions had shorter barrels with an overall length of 10 inches and in 1932 a fully automatic version with 30 round magazine was produced which proved popular in China. Interestingly in the late 1890s fully automatic prototypes were experimented with but the trials of this first true submachine gun were abandoned due to difficulties in handling.

- Brief description:
- Used in World War I and II, Spanish Civil War. German Mauser Gewehr Gew98 rifle calibre 7.92 x 57mm dated 1910 The Gew98 was introduced in 1898 for the 7.65mm cartridge used in the Mauser Model 1888 but this was soon superceeded by the 7.9 x 82.5mm cartridge. In 1903 a new cartridge was introduced the 7.92 x 57mm S-Geschoss S-Patrone andit was the latter round that went on to be used through two world wars. Rounds were carried in a Mannlicher style 5 round magazine fed by stripper clips. The bolt mechanism is considered to be one of the best in the world and the design which was refined in this rifle is now the standard design used in many current sporting rifles. The Gew98 was exported to many countries and built under licence in others. Production ran from 1898 up until the end of the First War in 1918. This example is smoothboredwhich was a common late 20th Century procedure to allow collectors to hold weapons on a shotgun certificate.

- Brief description:
- Designated Kar. 98 AZ during trials. 1908 -1918. used in World War I and issued to Heavy and Fortress Artillery, Pioneers and Cavalry. German Mauser G98 Karabiner 98az calibre 7.92 x 57mm dated 1917. Rifle [Gew98] introduced in 1898 the carbine version in 1908 Magazine capacity 5 rounds. This is a carbine version of the G98 the standard German rifle of WWI. It differs from the rifle by its shorter length and turned down bolt and the bolt recess in the stock. The rifle had a straight bolt which stuck out at the side. It also introduced the L shaped stacking rod at the muzzle used to interlock standing rifles into a pyramid. This carbine version was introduced in 1908. It was originally issued to cavalry and mountain troops and later became the weapon of choice of First War assault units or stormtroopers where its short length made it much handier than the full size rifle in trench warfare. It was being superceeded by newer carbines in 1923 though some continued in service in the Second World War. The G98 Kar 98a was refined to become the Kar 98b in 1923 and finally reworked to become the Kar 98K the standard German rifle of World War 2.
