- The radical and lawyer William Shaen (1820-1887) read Classics at University College London, graduating in 1840. He was the University of London's first clerk of Convocation, a post he held for ten years before joinng the University's Senate in 1880. He was a leading proponent of university education for women, both in London, where he helped to establish the London School of Medicine for Women and Bedford College, and in the ancient universities. A treasurer and Vice-President of the Royal Society, he wrote several astronomical pamphlets, copies of which he gave to Augustus De Morgan and which, through De Morgan, entered the University Library as part of its founding collection.
